How to Prep for a Brand Photoshoot

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Tips for Building a Brand

So, you’ve finally decided it’s time to invest in professional brand photos—yay, you! Whether you’re refreshing your website, launching a new service, or just sick of using that same old headshot from 2016, a brand shoot is a smart move. But now you’re wondering… how do I actually prepare for one?

Don’t stress—we’ve got your back.

As a web design company in NH that also offers professional photography (hi, we’re SunnValley 👋), we’ve helped lots of businesses look their best online. So we know what works, what to avoid, and how to make sure your shoot goes smoothly—and actually feels kinda fun.

Step 1: Know Your Brand Vibe

Before we even pick up a camera, let’s get clear on your brand personality. Are you relaxed and earthy? Bold and modern? Cozy and handmade? Your photos should reflect that energy.

Spend a little time thinking about:

  • What you want people to feel when they see your brand
  • What colors, textures, and settings match that vibe
  • The type of audience you’re trying to attract

Not sure? Scroll through Pinterest or Instagram and make a quick mood board. This helps your photographer (hi again 👋) understand your vision and translate it into visuals that make sense for your business.

Step 2: Think About Where the Photos Will Live

A good brand shoot is super versatile—but it also helps to know where the images will be used. Website headers? Instagram posts? Print brochures? All of the above?

Share that with your photographer in advance. We can shoot horizontally for your site banner, leave extra space for text overlays, or grab tight closeups for your product pages. Planning ahead = photos that fit wherever you need them.

Step 3: Plan Your Outfits (Yep, More Than One)

Think of your clothes like mini brand billboards. You want them to:

  • Match your brand colors or aesthetic
  • Be comfortable and flattering (so you feel confident!)
  • Avoid loud patterns or logos that distract

Bring at least 2–3 outfits if your shoot allows time for changes. Maybe a more polished look for website photos and something casual and fun for social. Layers and accessories can help switch things up without a full wardrobe swap.

Bonus tip: iron your clothes. Yes, really. Even small wrinkles show up in photos. (We speak from experience.)

Step 4: Location, Location, Location

Where you shoot matters a lot. It sets the entire tone of your brand story. A rustic barn and a sleek coworking space give off very different vibes.

You can shoot at your workplace, in a studio, outdoors, or even at a rented space that fits your look. At SunnValley, we help clients scout or recommend the perfect location based on their goals (and lighting—we’re obsessed with good light 🌞).

Make sure to clean and de-clutter if you’re using your own space. You don’t want a pile of cords, snacks, or coffee cups photo-bombing your brand.

Step 5: Bring Props (But Keep It Simple)

Props are a great way to tell your story. Think about tools of your trade, your product line, branded packaging, or even a coffee mug if that’s your thing.

Just don’t overdo it—you want the focus to be you, not your cluttered desk. A few meaningful items are perfect. If you’re a baker, bring a whisk. A designer? Your laptop or sketchbook. A realtor? A welcome mat or sold sign. You get the idea.

Step 6: Prep Your Face (and Hair, and Nails)

No need to go full glam unless that’s your brand—but a little grooming goes a long way. Wash your hair the day before (or whatever your best hair day is), trim or shape nails, and moisturize. Consider getting your makeup done professionally if it helps you feel more confident in front of the camera.

And don’t forget lip balm and powder for touch-ups, especially if we’re shooting outdoors.

Step 7: Practice Posing (Seriously)

No, you don’t have to model. But a little practice can make the shoot go a lot smoother. Stand in front of a mirror and see how different angles feel. Try smiling with and without teeth, hands in pockets, arms crossed, holding a product—whatever feels natural.

Your photographer (yup, still us if you’re working with SunnValley 😉) will help guide you on the day of, but the more relaxed and prepared you are, the better the photos will look.

Step 8: Don’t Forget the Details

Before shoot day, confirm:

  • The schedule (time, location, how long it’ll take)
  • What you’re bringing (outfits, props, product samples)
  • What your photographer is bringing (equipment, backdrops, lighting)
  • What kind of edits or files you’ll receive afterward

A good brand shoot is a team effort, and communication is key.

Step 9: On the Day… Just Have Fun

Really. The best brand photos happen when you’re relaxed, laughing, and yourself. This isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real. Your audience wants to connect with a human, not a mannequin.

So bring your energy, your personality, and maybe even a playlist. We’ll take care of the rest.
